Ingredients

Scale
  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 large apples, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour (for topping)
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup butter, melted or room temperature

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C) and line an 8×8 baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a stand mixer, cream the unsalted butter until light and fluffy, then mix in sugar, vanilla extract, and salt.
  3. Gradually add flour until a dough forms; press into the lined baking pan and bake for 15 minutes.
  4. Prepare the apple filling by tossing sliced apples with flour, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a mixing bowl.
  5. For the topping, mix remaining flour with brown sugar and cut in melted butter until crumbly.
  6. After baking the crust, increase the oven temperature to 350°F (175°C). Layer half of the topping on the crust, followed by the apple filling and then the remaining topping.
  7. Bake for an additional 30 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool completely before refrigerating for at least 2 hours before cutting into squares.
