Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 medium onion, grated
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon dried sage
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 large sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1/4 cup fruit juice (as a bourbon substitute)
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 1 cup chicken stock
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, grated onion, minced garlic, smoked paprika, dried sage, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Form into golf-ball-sized meatballs.
  2. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat; brown meatballs for about 6 minutes. Set aside.
  3. Boil sweet potatoes in salted water until fork-tender (12-15 minutes). Drain and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, deglaze with fruit juice; add maple syrup and chicken stock. Return meatballs to the skillet; cover and cook until heated through (8-10 minutes).
  5. Mash sweet potatoes with butter, heavy cream, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until smooth.
  6. Whisk cold butter into the sauce off heat for a velvety finish.
