Ingredients
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
- 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
- 4 ounces chopped German chocolate or semisweet chocolate
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- Pinch of salt
- 2 egg yolks
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup homemade German Chocolate Frosting
Instructions
- In a large saucepan over medium heat, whisk together 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream and cocoa powder until boiling. Reduce heat and simmer for 30 seconds.
- Remove from heat and stir in chopped chocolate until melted. Combine with remaining heavy cream in a bowl and strain through a mesh strainer.
- In the same saucepan, warm the whole milk, sugar, and salt over medium heat.
- Beat egg yolks in a small bowl and slowly add warm milk while whisking. Return to saucepan and cook until thickened (170°F).
- Strain mixture into the chocolate base, add vanilla extract, cool in an ice bath, then refrigerate for at least one hour.
- Prepare frosting while chilling. Once cold, churn in an ice cream maker according to instructions and fold in frosting before freezing.
